Why Robotaxi Infrastructure is a Real Estate Business

‍

The robotaxi technology works. The open question iswhether the infrastructure gets built fast enough to keep up. Voltera CEO Frank Reig joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to talk about our merger with Revel and why building the depots that keep autonomous fleets charged and on the road is, at its core, a real estate business.

‍

A merger built for growth

‍

Our merger with Revel closed on July 1, doubling ourdevelopment and real estate teams and expanding our footprint across thecountry. Reig was clear it wasn’t about cutting costs. It was about adding thepeople to meet the moment.

‍

That moment is arriving fast. As AV platforms scale froma handful of cities to dozens, site agreements that once took the better partof a year are now closing in a few months.

‍

Why infrastructure is really a real estate business

‍

Here’s what the market still gets wrong: we’re a real estate business that happens to install chargers, not the other way around. Finding the right site means lining up available power, workable zoning, a willing landlord, and proximity to ride-share demand.

‍

Power is the binding constraint, so we prioritize sites near existing utility infrastructure and own the land wherever we can. Our on-the-ground teams source off-market deals directly from owners, which helps keep costs, and ultimately customer pricing, lower.

‍

“We call ourselves a builder, developer, owner, operatorof AV infrastructure for ride-hail fleets,” Reig said. “But another way todescribe all that is we’re a real estate developer.”

‍

Standardized where it can be, fexible where we need to be

‍

We’re standardizing site design based on what’s worked, while staying flexible where each site demands it. What we don’t compromise on is the infrastructure that’s costly to change later, like power built for tomorrow’s charging speeds and fiber connectivity from day one.

‍

What success looks like from here

‍

Reig’s goal is for every major AV platform in the US to see Voltera as “the right arm of our team” within two years. Fleets are scaling fast, and power, land, and depots are the ceiling on how fast that happens. Raising that ceiling is the whole job.
